Wednesday, September 25

Objective
SWBAT evaluate the effectiveness of the play’s resolution and denouement.  SWBAT describe the play’s main theme.

Do-NowSeven years have passed between the last scene we read and the final scene in the play.  What do you predict has happened to each of the characters during these seven years?  Characters: Troy, Rose, Lyons, Bono, Cory, Gabriel, Raynell.  (We know Troy has died, but what might his life have been like during the seven years before he died?)  Explain.

Today: 1) Note-taking: Plot Pyramid and Theme.  How can the resolution and denouement of a play help create the play's theme?

2) Read Act 2, Scene 5 of "Fences."

Exit SlipWhat do you believe was the main theme of “Fences.”  Cite evidence in the play’s resolution and denouement to support this theme.

HomeworkScene Re-Write: Re-write the final scene of “Fences” changing the play’s main theme.  Your re-write should begin any time after the events in Act 2, Scene 4 and should only include characters originally from the play.  You do not have to include a seven-year time lapse between scenes and can choose to have Troy live.  The events in your final scene should create a different theme/message than the one intended by the author and should include a resolution and denouement for the play.  Re-writes should be at least four pages long (two pages front and back) and should be written in play format.  Along with your re-write, you should include a brief explanation (5-7 sentences) addressing the changes you made to the play's ending and explaining how these changes act to convey your new theme.  ***DUE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER, 27***
