Objective: SWBAT evaluate the effectiveness of the author's use of foreshadowing and irony in Act 1, Scene 4 of "Fences." SWBAT analyze how the events from Troy's childhood and young adulthood affected his adult life.
Do-Now: How can the events from your childhood have a permanent effect on your life? Describe an event from your childhood and the effect(s) it has had on you.
Today: 1) Review foreshadowing: when an author gives you hints about what will occur later on in the story.
Introduce situational irony: when the opposite of what you expect to happen occurs.
Key Question: How can these devices be used to impact the reader?
2) Read Act 1, Scene 4 pp. 41-50.
3) How has Troy's past affected him? How can we use a Cause/Effect chart to analyze Troy?
4) In groups, read the rest of Act 1, Scene 4, filling out the Cause/Effect chart for Troy.
