Friday, September 20

Objective: SWBAT complete a non-graded quiz to assess what they've learned the first two weeks of school.  SWBAT demonstrate their understanding of the play "Fences" by completing their choice of TWO Friday Free Choice activities.

Do-Now: Free Write (Write 5-7 sentences about anything you want)

Today: 1) Quiz (non-graded)

2) Friday Free Choice : Choose TWO of the following activities to demonstrate your knowledge of “Fences.”  Each activity is worth 20 points.  You will be completing ONE activity in class and ONE activity for homework.  If you complete more than two activities, you will receive 20 points Extra Credit for each additional activity.


CHOICE #1: Baby Mama Drama: Pretend Troy decided to bring Rose on a talk show to tell her about his affair.  Write a script for the talk show following the correct playwriting format.  Your script should be two pages (one page front and back.)  Remember to skip a line when a new character speaks.

Grading: 10 points for length (two pages, 5 points per page), 5 points for format, 5 points for creativity/originality

CHOICE #2: People Poems: Choose four of the characters from the play.  For each character, write a four-lined poem (your poems will total sixteen lines.)  These poems can describe what each character looks like, acts like, or does in the play.  The poems should rhyme and must follow either an AABB or ABAB rhyme scheme.

            Grading: 10 points for length (16 lines), 5 points for rhyme scheme, 5 points for
            creativity/originality

CHOICE #3: Dear Diary: Pretend you are Rose.  Troy has just confessed to you that he is cheating with another woman and having a baby with her.  Write a diary entry about Troy’s confession to you and your fight with him.  Talk about how you feel and what you’re thinking of doing next.  Your entry should be at least twenty full sentences long and should be based off what you know about Rose from reading “Fences.”

            Grading: 10 points for length (20 sentences), 5 points for accuracy, 5 points for
            creativity/originality

CHOICE #4: Scene Sketch: Choose one of the scenes from “Fences” and draw a picture of what you believe the scene would look like.  On the back of the picture, write a sentence describing what the picture is depicting.  Your picture may be in black and white or color and must be hand-drawn.  Stick figures and computer printed images are not acceptable.

            Grading: 10 points for neatness, 5 points for accuracy, 5 points for craftsmanship

Exit Slip: How well do you think you did on the quiz?  What questions did you have trouble with?  What questions were easy for you?

Homework: Complete your second Friday Free Choice activity.  (Remember, if you do more than two you will receive Extra Credit!)
