5) Free Choice Activities: Choose ONE of the following activities to complete today in class and ONE activity to complete for homework.

Activity #1 – Setting Sketch: Look back at the description of the setting on pp. 23-24.  Using the details given in this description, draw the set of the play as accurately as you can.  In addition to the things which are mentioned in the description, you may also add things which you believe the Youngers would have had in their apartment.  This sketch should be done neatly on a blank sheet of paper and may be in black and white or color.

Activity #2 – Dear Diary: Pretend you are one of the play’s female characters (Mama, Beneatha, or Ruth.)  Write a diary entry about the events which occur in Act 1 from your point of view.  In addition to including details from the play, you may also include the character’s thoughts/feelings (which you can infer based on her actions and dialogue in the play.)  This diary entry should be written in first person and should be a minimum of TWENTY sentences long.

Activity #3 – Talk Show: Pretend Ruth decided to bring Walter on a talk show to reveal her pregnancy and her plans for an abortion.  Write a scene in which the characters from the play appear on a talk show to discuss the pregnancy.  The scene may include any of the characters from the play in addition to a host for the show.  Your scene should be at least TWO pages long and should be written in play format.  Make sure to have Ruth discuss why she is choosing to have the abortion and include Walter’s reaction to her choice.

Activity #4 – People Poems: Choose FOUR of the characters from the play.  For each character, write a four-lined poem (your poems will total sixteen lines.)  These poems should be used to characterize each character by describing what each character looks like, acts like, says, or does in the play.  The poems should rhyme and must follow either an AABB or ABAB rhyme scheme.
