Thursday, November 7

Objective: Students will be able to describe the history of the piano in order to understand its importance to the characters.  Students will be able to compare two songs in order to determine the author's purpose for including the songs in the play.

Do-Now: Recall Troy's "Blue" song from "Fences."  What was this song about?  How did this song relate to the play?  What do you believe was the author's purpose (reason) for including this song in the play?  Explain.

Today: 1) Go over Exit Slips from Monday.

2) Discuss Do-Now responses and August Wilson's purpose for including song in his plays.

3) Class will read pp. 39-40 examining Boy Willie's song and completing the left hand side of the T-chart.

4) In groups, read pp. 40-54, completing the right hand side of the T-chart for Wining Boy's song.

Exit Slip: On the bottom of your T-chart, explain what you believe to be the author's purpose for including these songs in the play.  On your Exit Slip: Describe the history of the piano.  Based on the piano's history, why do you believe Berniece is unwilling to sell it?  Based on the piano's history, why do you believe Boy Willie wants to sell it?
