Objective: Students
will be able to characterize Mama, Ruth, Beneatha, and Walter in order to make
inferences and predictions about each character.
Do-Now: What differences did you notice between the play and the movie? Why do you believe the director made these changes? Are there any parts which were added or taken out which you feel take away from the true meaning of the play? Explain.
Today: 1) Review Exit Slips from Monday
2) Introduce characterization: someone can be characterized based on his/her appearance,
dialogue, actions, inner thoughts, and how other characters feel/react towards
him/her
3) Class will read Act 1, Scene 2 pp. 54-60 together, characterizing Ruth
4) In groups, read Act 1, Scene 2 pp. 60-66, characterizing Beneatha
5) Class will watch part of Act 1, Scene 2
Exit Slip: What does Asagai's nickname for Beneatha, Alaiyo, mean? Based on what you know about Beneatha's character, how does this nickname suit her? If you were given a nickname, what do you believe it would be? What characteristics do you have that would make this nickname appropriate for you?

and react toward you. Your
