Objective: SWBAT analyze Avery's dream in "The Piano Lesson" by summarizing the dream, explaining the significance behind THREE of the symbols in the dream, and, ultimately, determining the meaning of the dream as it relates to Avery.

Do-Now:  FREE WRITE (Write 5-7 sentences about anything you want) or Describe a dream you've had recently.

Today: 1) Go over Exit Slips

2) What do our dreams mean?

3) Finish reading Act 1, Scene 1 pp. 19-28.

4) Watch Act 1, Scene 1 of "The Piano Lesson."

MEGA Exit Slip: Look back at Avery's monologue on pp. 24-25.  Summarize what Avery saw in his dream.  Next, explain the meaning behind THREE of the symbols in his dream.  Finally, explain what you believe to be the meaning of this dream and how it relates to Avery's claim that he's meant to be a pastor.

Homework: Legacy Project Due Friday, November 15.

Objective: SWBAT identify and describe the main conflict in "The Piano Lesson."  SWBAT analyze the piano as a symbol by describing its importance to Boy Willie.  SWBAT evaluate the significance of Sutter’s ghost by describing its impact on the characters in the play. 

 Do-NowRecall Troy’s monologue’s in “Fences.”  What was the purpose of these monologues?  How did they impact the play?  What did we learn about Troy through his monologues?

Today: 1) Review monologue and metaphor.

2) Class will continue to read Act 1, Scene 1.  Class will begin to fill out the chart for the characters' reactions to Sutter's ghost. 

3) In groups, students will read Act 1, pp. 15-19 (where Maretha enters) and finish filling out the chart.

Exit SlipDescribe the meaning behind Doaker’s train metaphor that he gives during his monologue.  Relate this metaphor to your own life.  Do you feel you are one of the people who Doaker claims gets on the train and expects it to head where he/she wants to go?  Explain.

What do you hope to leave as your legacy?  That is, what do you want to leave behind that people will remember you for when you’re gone?  Why is it important for someone to be remembered after he/she is gone?


Today: 1) What is a legacy?  Introduce Legacy Project

2) Anticipation Guide for "The Piano Lesson:"

Agree or Disagree: The wrong you do in your life will always come back to haunt you.

Agree or Disagree: It is important to respect the wishes of your elders, even if they have been dead  for many years.

Agree or Disagree: Every woman needs a man to help take care of her, but not every man needs a woman.

Agree or Disagree: Once someone becomes a criminal, he/she will most likely remain a criminal for the rest of his/her life.

Agree or Disagree: There is such a thing as luck and certain things you do can cause good or bad luck for you.

3) Review symbolism and conflict.  How was Desdemona's handkerchief a symbol in "Othello?"

4) Class will read Act 1, Scene 1 of "The Piano Lesson" pp. 1-12.

Exit Slip: What appears to be the main conflict in the play?  What does Boy Willie plan on doing with the piano?  What do you believe the piano symbolizes to Boy Willie?
