Objective: SWBAT identify and describe the main conflict in "The Piano Lesson."  SWBAT analyze the piano as a symbol by describing its importance to Boy Willie.  SWBAT evaluate the significance of Sutter’s ghost by describing its impact on the characters in the play.

Do-NowRecall Troy’s monologue’s in “Fences.”  What was the purpose of these monologues?  How did they impact the play?  What did we learn about Troy through his monologues?

Today: 1) Review monologue and metaphor.

2) Class will continue to read Act 1, Scene 1.  Class will begin to fill out the chart for the characters' reactions to Sutter's ghost.

3) In groups, students will read Act 1, pp. 15-19 (where Maretha enters) and finish filling out the chart.

Exit SlipDescribe the meaning behind Doaker’s train metaphor that he gives during his monologue.  Relate this metaphor to your own life.  Do you feel you are one of the people who Doaker claims gets on the train and expects it to head where he/she wants to go?  Explain.
