Do-Now:
Based on the
statements from your Anticipation Guide, make THREE predictions about
Macbeth.
|
Today: 1) Review Anticipation Guides and predictions
2) Review elements of a Shakespearean Tragedy
3) Introduce paradox: a statement that contradicts itself, but expresses a possible truth.
Examples: "The more money you spend, the more money
you save."
"Nobody goes to that restaurant because it's too
crowded."
"Sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind."
"I can resist anything but temptation."
~ Oscar Wilde
"If I call myself a liar, am I telling the truth?"
4) Class will read Act 1, Scenes 1 and 2 of "Macbeth"
5) In groups, read Act 1 Scene 3 (stop at the bottom of pg. 17 where Ross and Angus enter)

Exit Slip: What predictions do the witches make for Macbeth? What prediction do the witches make for Banquo? What might each character do to make these predictions come true? Banquo is described as being lesser than Macbeth, but also greater and not as happy as Macbeth, yet much happier. What do you believe these paradoxes mean?
